Here is my posted reply:

You really want to know what kids are learning in DC and Baltimore schools? I live in Maryland and go to a Baltimore college. I've seen it. It's absolutely heinous. I volunteered to tutor high school kids from Baltimore City schools last year and most of them couldn't do basic math. Now when I say 'basic' I mean basic. They were completely reliant on calculators. Most couldn't even add two single digit numbers together, let alone divide anything. No one ever taught them long division. Yet, these kids were getting A's in their classes. Additionally, the English program allows them to write papers with slang and racial slurs. And trying to teach them anything is like beating your head against a brick wall. I can only wonder how the teachers feel about all this. They are probably just as frustrated with them. That or they too can only do math with a calculator and don't know how to use proper grammar.

GAH!!! So ridiculous!

Well, you wanted to know, and there you have it.
</rant>

~ DatapikeDatahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07637750707242675109noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7297200.post-81049495022669283302008-11-12T12:07:00.002-05:002008-11-12T12:41:39.652-05:00the wonderful world of webSo I had to write a paper last night. An easy task for it was a mere page, though single spaced. Well I get back from class at a little before 10 and I didn't sleep until 130. What in the world, you may ask, could I have been doing to take 3 hours to write a paper? Well to sum it up, the interwebs.
It is a very distracting and fickle thing, you see. I stumble onto it for a minute to check the usual things, email, bank, school, etc., and then end up surfing away on an seemingly unending ocean of information. The interwebs were answering my every whim, but what it didn't do was write my paper for me. Granted, a bit of me was putting off the paper because of the sole fact that it was about rape. Not exactly the most cheerful subject, I know. But also, the ADD part of my brain decided to go a little bit insane last night. I was going to complete my storyboard for one of my animation classes too, but well, suffice it to say, that didn't happen.
On a lighter note, my 3D animation class went fairly well today. He actually showed us how to do a bit more in Maya and it was indeed helpful. Yay for NURBS.
Also, I'm supposedly having an interview today in about 30 minutes but I have yet to receive confirmation that such meeting is actually taking place today. I suppose I'll go up there regardless and see if there is anyone to talk to. Bah. Oh well. If it results in a second job then whoo-hoo! I just hope it doesn't kill me.Datahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07637750707242675109noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7297200.post-42360402689305295732008-11-10T17:01:00.002-05:002008-11-10T17:13:24.304-05:00catchupI know I haven't posted in a long time, but I've been busy as hell. I found a job at the end of July in an electrical company doing desk work. It's been pretty good, but the fact that I'm now back at college, I'm not working full-time and therefore not getting enough money. Causally, since I'm doing 19 credits and working 20ish hours a week.... I'm not sleeping much. Ironically enough, we are now talking about sleep disorders in my Psych class. So frickin tired. Hungry too.

So Jared and I are starting on a diet, but I don't know how it's going to go. A big problem is that I don't have time to make salads and such, nor any kind of food that isn't room temperature, but also that I can't afford to buy healthyish food while at the Commons. I hope he does better than he was, because I know how much he really wants to get in shape. I think it's great, but I know it's gonna be a long road.

Well, class is out. Hopefully I'll be posting more often from now on.Datahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07637750707242675109noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7297200.post-81667073667542820592008-05-21T18:51:00.002-04:002008-05-21T19:03:40.549-04:00shopping cart the homicidal maniacI was leaving the arena after working on today's comic books and it was raining lightly. By the time I got to my car, the wind was pushing me back and pelting me in the face with rain. But once I got into the car the windshield suddenly filled with water as the rain turned into buckets pouring down from the sky. I saw a single shopping cart rolling slowly across the parking lot, pushed by the wind and rain, and just started laughing my ass off. Then three more followed its lead and I decided it was no longer safe to have my car sit in that lot. It was a tad ridiculous really. Maybe they just wanted out of their metal corral so they could roll wild and free. Silly little things.Datahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07637750707242675109noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7297200.post-84873336610335130442008-05-15T16:10:00.004-04:002008-05-17T11:53:11.824-04:00vestigial makes the world go roundvestigial limbs:
Beware the whale walkers!
These large creatures seem docile and harmless during the day, but by night they creep onto dry land and abduct people and creatures to take them to their watery grave from which they shall never return. How can they do this you ask? Well they have vestigial legs left over from when they once walked on land all the time. With these, in conjunction with their fins, they move themselves across the earth and drag their unsuspecting prey off to the depths of the sea. So don't go out at night if you live near a seacoast, because you never know when the whale walkers will get you.
_______________

vestigial sex:
Diego Rivera's sexual endeavors were also vestigial and meaningless. He was a player of his time, very incompetent but not impotent, blindingly clearly not even, because he had sex with many people with reckless abandon. But he did have a tendency to think he was slightly omnipotent and that his paintings were better than many others and regardless of the fact that his stuff looked nothing like it, he insisted his work was rooted in Mayan and Aztec art. Lies.
_______________

Mixing the two:
Tyrannosaurus Rex's had vestigial arms which couldn't reach out to do anything. Which makes me think, how could they have sex without their arms to balance? This also brought an interesting image into my head - tyrannosaurus sex - a new position where you keep your arms curled up and don't use them, but that could always be misconstrued as S/M depending on how it's done, maybe with the arms bound in some way to make them curled up as such. But who cares really if it is considered naughty, when the world runs on sex and despite what people say, they always have it on their minds.Datahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07637750707242675109noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7297200.post-66884461143589422622008-05-13T15:31:00.003-04:002008-11-12T21:28:28.719-05:00playful cat fight or homicide attempt? The photographer claims that this is a mere playfight, but Anubis is so much larger than Butch, though only 4 weeks older. I came here thinking that the people would be more mature, smarter, and actually want to be here since they chose to be. I was wrong. People still talk in class, there is no respect, and no one has any sort of threshold for silence. I've always felt like I was more mature than those around me and that I always have been older than my age, but it's even worse now. When I was 12 I felt 15, when 16, I felt 20, and now at almost 20, I feel 28. That's a big jump. But it's not just me, it's also those around me. The people here seem 15 and they're 20 or more mostly. I just don't understand how society has regressed this much in just a matter of years. I hate it. The thing is though, it's probably the same anywhere in the US.

I have always felt out of place and have never felt comfortable in my skin, but I thought it would eventually even out, but no. The same phenomenon has occurred in my relationships. The range has gone from 17 when I was 14, 23 when I was 16, 27 when 18, and now 34 at 19. It's astounding. I'm not even sure why it's happened, but I've found that the people I hang around are usually of an older crowd, and increasingly so in the past few years. All because the people my age are absolutely, wonderfully, tarded. And I hate them. Even now, most of my best friends are around 22 to 26 at school and 28 to 35 back home.

Because of those I surround myself with, no matter the situation, people still think I'm about 24, especially when around the 30's crowd. I'm not complaining, because I hate my actual age - there's too much stigma to the word 'teenager' and I can't wait til I turn 20 so it will be slightly easier, and then 21 so that it will be official by law that I am actually an adult and have all the same rights as everyone else. That is the only thing in my life that I cannot change - my age - and it is the most detrimental.

I suppose that is just how life is, but I can't help but wonder how different things would be if I had been born several years earlier so that I'd actually be with the generation to which I belong. My parents were raised a certain way, and that was an old-fashioned, but respectful and wholesome way. I was raised in a world with respect for your elders as well as your peers, politeness, and little money. A world without sexism, racism, and cursing. At around 14 I was exposed to all three of these when I entered the workforce.

Kids today are raised by day care centers, their parents see them on nights and weekends, and once they get into a school where they have homework, the parents are too busy to try to help them with it, hence the 'no child left behind' tactic. When a kid can't do the work, you just push him through to the next grade so that no one fails. It makes them think it's okay to be mediocre and to not put any effort into studying or anything for that matter. It allows parents to be lazy and go to work for 45 hours a week, ignoring family responsibilities, and thinking that 80k is not enough to live on, so they both work and stay away from home. And another thing - children - most parents today only have them because they got pregnant in high school and decide it's a better idea to keep the kid, maybe get married, and then destroy the rest of their lives. One decision by one person can rip apart 3 people or more these days - all because they make the wrong choice and decide that it's okay to have a child when you're 18, unemployed, unskilled, and alone. Well here's a newsflash for you: it's not.

My high school class had about 5 or 600 people in it when we were freshman, and by the time graduation rolled around, there were about 400, if that. The reason for this precipitous decline? Teen pregnancy, drugs, guns, and drinking. They all made stupid decisions and dropped out, got themselves expelled, or killed. You'd think it would be sad, but no, it's just pathetic. So many young lives ruined because of poor decisions brought about by poor raising. Their parents were about 45 then, many who got pregnant very young, possibly in high school, and they come from an age of free love, disrespect, and drugs. They were rebels and didn't listen to anything their parents told them. So I don't blame the parents born before 1950, because it wasn't their fault, and well, that's the age my parents came from. They learned how to raise children properly and prevented the 'baby boomers' influence from ever poisoning my bloodline.

Because of my upbringing, I have an odd aversion to drunken parties and drugs, I mean I dabbled briefly in the rebellious arts, but learned that it's really not all it's cracked up to be. And even without those things I am a fun person to hang out with, I have better, truer friends, and have nothing to hide from my parents. That's a large factor with kids not respecting their parents today too - they keep so many secrets from them and do all these stupid things. It's nonsense honestly. They think they can run around and do whatever they want and get away with it. Then someday the real world will hit them in the face like a ton of bricks and they'll realize that they really should have listened to their parents and wish that they had some kind of actual skills to be able to make it in the world. But then again, that's what the food service industry is for.Datahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07637750707242675109noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7297200.post-49233149313638021402008-05-04T17:51:00.002-04:002008-05-06T11:16:10.268-04:00serrated negativity from the wrestlers and everyone giving him crap tonight. i'm concerned that this may not be faked. i know a lot of people didnt like him, and even i didnt care for him, but i never thought someone would go as far as this. i hope for the sake of the wwe that this is just another dramatic stunt for attention and audience grabbing. if Vince is dead, then i hope his soul rests in peace from this day on, if not, then it was a bad stunt just for the hell of it. if he has been killed, then this is serious business and the entire wwe may shut down in the next few years, and that will be a shame. goodbye vince, i hope you're still around, but if not, then may you rest well. you deserve night we went out and wandered around catonsville for a few hours. we had initially set out for gas, taco bell, and then we planned on just driving around randomly to relax. well after grabbing some food, we started talking about test driving a car. i wanted to drive a prius of course b/c it's amazing and incredibly hybrid. then the idea was presented to get an element and drive it somewhere to park and...hehe....yeah...so anyway though...so we went to the toyota dealership to get my prius fix for the day and within about 15 minutes of bullshitting the apparently newbie salesman, i was inside the prius, ready to drive my heart out. but there was one little bump along the road...he got in with us. he started telling me how to drive the car and would not shut up until i turned the AC on b/c he was hot. so it pissed me off that he not only was telling me what to do, but that he had gotten in the car with me, which means our test drive was really just a stressful spin around the parking lot and very uneventful. it made me worry what would happen when we went to a honda dealership for the element whenever we decided to go there. if the guy gets in the element with us i may have to slay him. that being said, i shall go back to paying slight attention in class or leaving apparently, so that's great.
well, that's all for now.
data just hit me with your glass penisok, to explain the title, i was on the floor. ulrich helped me up, with, i may add, way more force than i expected from her petite frame. she had a glass bottle in her hoodie pocket. it hit me as i slammed into her from the force of being vertical again. and without considering the other possiblilities of what i could have said, i exclaimed the afformentioned title.
off to work on my portrait project with my very intense coffee. i am drawing ulrich. woot!
data out.
for Summers radio show returns on talkshoe. go to licd.com for more info if interested. they will field questions and it's sure to be a hoot.
i'm sitting here now enjoying my morning coffee and ramen lastly, battlestar galactica is an awesome show. hands down. i recently got pulled into the group of my friends that watches it, and i enjoy it. especially the game we have with "frack it" thats always hilarious.
well, that's all for now.
data workso i've been working with the layout recently and i hope to get something even better going on with it soon enough. and i missed work yesterday for the fact that i was feeling awful and still tired when i woke up, and even after a nap i was still tired and then my stomach hurt insanely. so that sucked a bunch, but i'm feeling better even though i'm still tired and generally just blah.<br motion, see me let gocurrently, the sky outside has turned to a lovely slightly cloudy gradient of royal blue to a deep crimson at the horizon (or in the words of 3eb "a most beautiful ruby red"). i was given the opportunity to witness this beauty for a few moments on my break from class just now. i needed a break from the assignment and i wanted a breath of the chilly april air. i actually finished my paper for english today before i even went to spanish, so woot woot! i chose a surprising topic and wrote an astounding 6 pages on it...well over the 4 page minimum. so back to the grind of class again.

data gadgetssorry i havent been posting much i've been a bit insane recently. i worked all weekend and allowed time slots for my other job, but i wasnt needed there, so i had a bit of time where i just sorta laid around and felt depressed or tired. friday was the thirteenth and would have been my and brad's eighteen month anniversary. i was doing well all day b/c denny was trying to keep me happy and keep my mind off of it. but that got shot to hell when brad texted me....but enough angst and depression.
i've discovered some really cool progs for mac:
- google desktop
- sticky rain rain, we love rain, splash splash splash, fun fun funhave you ever noticed how crisp the air is after it rains? everything seems clearer and brighter and there is a nice moist feel to the ground under your feet.
i just got out of spanish class and it had apparently rained while i was in there, because i emerged from the dark steps of the MP building and was greeted by a clearer sky and brighter feelings. it's funny how much something little and seemingly insignificant like the weather can affect your mood. at least it does for me. earlier, it had been cloudy and overcast and generally dark and gloomy, so it had been kinda gray when i left for class. but within an hour and a half, it changed so much and so did my mood.
i had gone into the classroom nervous and anxious about the writing test, but came out of it relieved and content, as if a weight had been lifted from my shoulders. i felt so much better and so much more positive about life, and not my usual positive in the fact that i'm positive the world hates me or something as such, but a pure and amazing positive aspect on life. that maybe i'm not going to die alone, and maybe i can be something good in this world. also that maybe, just maybe, i'm not as royally screwed over in life as i thought i was. or maybe i'm just high on endorphins or something. who the hell knows.

*if anyone knows where the title of this post is from, i salute you*

that is all.
data newsSex in our schools
so this is insane. sohmer comments at licd.com:

I believe that in today's ever increasing competitive environment, it's not as easy being a kid as it maybe once was. I believe that children are indoctrinated at a very young age to plan and obsess about their future, whatever that may be. I believe that from out of the womb, they're forced into a situation where they need to work hard, study hard, to get the good grades, to get into the good colleges, to get the good jobs.

Being one who believes strongly in hard work, part of me applauds this mentality, and this driving force that's being instilled into the next generation. I'd much rather see them struggling to become tomorrow's lawyers, doctors and comic strip writers than waiting at the welfare office for a check.

That said, I also believe quite firmly that kids should have the opportunity to be kids. At 10 years old, they should not have to spend 8 hours in school only to be followed by another 6 hours of homework. They should be able to play, to go outside, to hang out with their friends, waste hours on stupid video games, find out what happens when you down 5 pixie sticks in a very short amount of period, build forts, discover the joy of Lego, watch Lord of the Rings and all 6 Star Wars in one sitting…

12 year olds should not suffer from stress. They should be kids. They should play.

While being overworked and overburdened is a massive issue, it's not really the one I wanted to address today.

Sean was kind enough to send me over this link to a CNN Story that I somehow missed in my hourly trolling. He was curious as to what I thought about it, as someone who may write/talk about sex from time to time…very rarely.

And my thoughts?

(Please note that I generally am of the mind that using coarse language frequently is a sign of a poor vocabulary, yet I do think it serves its purpose well in the following sentence.)

I think its fucking twisted.

11 year olds having sex is a product of a diseased society, of a society where parents are not spending enough time with their children, where sexual education is severely lacking in the bible thumping states, where the so-called tween celebrities consist of Paris Hilton, Linsday Lohan and the always wonderful role model Britney Spears.

The real issue here, folks, is that kids are growing up too damn quickly.

11 year olds should not be having sex. They should be kids. They should play.

With their clothes on.

yay sohmer, co-creator of Licd and the brilliant Rayne Summers
i figure that's enough sad on that, and i don't really feel like commenting much on it, it's just the fact that ten year olds should NOT have sex! ok. that's all on that.

and in honor of easter:
Cadbury Pimp

so amazing.... i wanna do it now... hehe 10000 calories...Datahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07637750707242675109noreply@blogger.com0
